Record Numbers Hit the Track During Pre-Season

Pre-season training at St Bernard's Football Club is in full swing, and the energy around the Snakepit is palpable. A record-breaking 150 players have joined the pre-season ranks, signalling a strong commitment and excitement for the 2025 season. The impressive turnout reflects the club's positive trajectory and the enticing environment fostered by Senior Coach Steven Alessio and his Coaching team, which for the first time in many years the club will field four senior teams.

A key highlight of the pre-season has been the influx of talent from the club's successful U19 program, Coached by Marcus Barham, who led them to a Grand Final appearance in 2024. A significant number of these graduating players, many of whom were regulars at pre-season sessions, have embraced the opportunity to step up to senior football. This transition speaks volumes about the club's development pathway and the promising future of the senior squad.

Adding to the excitement is the arrival of numerous new recruits, bringing a diverse range of experience to the club. From players with AFL backgrounds to those with proven track records in the VFL, VAFA and other local football leagues, this off-season has seen an unprecedented number of new faces at the Snakepit. The club is buzzing with anticipation, eager for fans to witness these new additions in action.

Reinforcing the strong culture at St Bernard's FC, an incredible 99% of the senior group from 2024 have recommitted for the upcoming season. This remarkable retention rate provides a solid foundation for Steven Alessio and the other coaches to continue implementing their strategy and tactics with a group that now boasts a year of Premier footy experience under their belts. The continuity and shared understanding will undoubtedly be a significant advantage as the team strives for success.

While driving the Senior Program at St Bernard's FC, Steven Alessio is also broadening his coaching experience with a non-gameday coaching role at VFL Club Port Melbourne. This opportunity, endorsed by the club, follows a tradition at the club of supporting Coach development, similar to past collaborations with highly respected Player and AFL Coach Mentor, David Wheadon. David's work with the entire Senior Coaching group continues to reap rewards for our Coaches and Players alike. The experience at VFL level for Alessio will ensure St Bernards FC are at the forefront of game and coaching trends at the top levels of the game.

With practice matches just weeks away, the players are diligently working towards peak fitness and fine-tuning their game plan. The dedication and intensity at training are clear indicators that the team is determined to leave no stone unturned in their preparations for the 2025 season.

St Bernard's FC fans have every reason to be optimistic as the club heads into the new year with a potent mix of established talent, exciting new recruits, and a unified coaching vision.
