We started the season with a bang, kicking 11.4-70 in the first quarter of our very first game together. This effort helped to generate a lot of team belief, resulting in an average score 111 points per game from Rounds 1-9 vs conceding 47 points from our opposition. The middle part of the season from Rounds 10-12 were more challenging. Injury, overseas trips, form and muddy conditions made for some challenging games for our boys. Our average score dropped to 74 points vs 68 points from our opposition. We played our most inexperienced teams in both age and games during this period. However, their endeavour could not be questioned, especially the 8 point victory away vs De La Salle in heavy rain and boggy conditions by one of our most inexperienced teams for the year. For the remainder of the season we only improved. Remaining undefeated. This allowed us the luxury of training the players with an eye to finals earlier than usual. The players responded to extra fitness and recovery sessions which ultimately set them up for a fantastic finals series. The finals campaign consisted of a Semi Final and Grand Final win against Fitzroy FC. We played them on four occasions for the season and both teams knew each other's strengths and weaknesses intimately. Our second quarter in the Semi-Final was one of the most hard fought physical battles we have seen in a long time resulting in 0.4-4 vs 0.3-3 scoreline for the quarter. This physical battle set up a forceful next quarter, scoring 5.6-36 to 0.0-0. In contrast, early in the Grand Final there was a 4 goal wind advantage which had us trailing by 27 points at one stage. The fighting spirit of our team evened the score at halftime. Our boys refused to give in to a Fitzroy team who threw everything at us in both finals. Our team’s fight to win the third quarter against the wind setup a fantastic 7 goal haul and victory in an historic season.
