Round 4: Coaches Notes

U16 Team Tankey

I have seen many good renditions of the Bernards song over the years, but not many rival that sung by our under 16's following their stirring 4 point win over nemesis Newport.

The Power arrived at the Snakepit stacked with Western Jets stars, inter-league guns and a history of having their way with us over the years.

Not today. Our pressure was enormous, we played on the edge while our opponents went over it, we had heroic deeds on all lines and played a great brand of football that deserved the W and the plaudits that followed. A great team effort by all.

U14G Team Roach

A tough hit-out at Point Cook against another Div 1 team from last year saw us go down by 90, but the injury ravaged U14 girls kept giving their best against a classy more experienced opponent.

Lucia Vassilopolius and Alice Ruth stood out with toughness and skill, while Jess Vandeloo and Taylor Clues worked hard all game. Miekah Cooper received the Heartland for her constant efforts all day in the ruck. On to next week.

U14 Team Bloomfield

It was a great game by the u14’s this week. Probably played their best game this year. Up against the benchmark team of the comp it gave us an opportunity to see where we are after 4 rounds.

Today showed we aren’t far away we just need to improve in a few areas of our game. Over the next 4 weeks we will work on those areas and the results will be positive moving forward.

U14 Team Sacco

A solid 31-point win today by St Bernard's U14s (2) against Point Cook (3) today who are very well coached. The intent was clear from the outset with fierce gang tackling and lots of pressure put on the ball. The team listened to instructions from training during the week and executed them accordingly.

It was a wonderful celebration for a great club servant, Jacob "Buckets" Calleja, in his 50th game. He kicked 2 goals today with Henry Sacco and Tommy Hickey joining him as multiple goal kickers. Other impressive games came from Max Vescio, Jack McConvill, Michele Inguanti, and Christian Ripa. The development of young big ruckman Harrison Doyle is unfolding in front of our eyes as he begins to realise the potential we see in him. His first two contests in the forward 50 directly resulted in goals to his teammates.

Overall, it was a great day to round out grading as this team looks to tackle the next 10 weeks together as one team!

U12G Team Zucco

St Bernard’s U12 Girls vs Altona Juniors: Played at home against a bigger, more experienced Altona side. Tough game, going down by 58 points.

Today’s Captain Ruby Bayliss led from the front in and under. Great efforts from Alyssa Galle and Eva McManus with plenty of run and ball. Eva Guardabascio stood strong in defence with some solid marks. The girls are learning and building confidence each week.

U12 Team Farrugia

U12,1 Another close loss today to Newport who are a very talented benchmark team in Div1.

Just skill errors cost us today so something to work on at training and very close to a win again, 3 boys had 50 game milestones today Edison Roach, Patty Moelands, Mason Farrugia so congrats to the boys, We look forward to seeing our grading results, great 4 weeks of competitive footy.

U12 Team Trewin

Smashed Yarraville

U12 Team Fitzpatrick

Another great effort by the boys today being able to neutralise a solid opposition for 2 of the 4 quarters out at Williamstown. We are encouraged to see the boys developing and building confidence each week as we head out of the grading games and in to the season proper from next week.

Todays highlights included the games of :

•  Max (Magic) Brown for being one of our best and getting the Heartland award ! Max read the play like a JK Rowling novel today and he continues to develop each week which is great to see;

•  Rolls (Alessandro) Bassilone - played another super game for our team this week running out the game like Phar Lap - he has been a superb leader for our team so far this year;

•  James (Muzzie) Murray and Arthur (Dodger) Malina were also recognised post game as ‘most improved’ with a Muzzie one handed mark on the last line of defence making the highlight reel along with Dodgers several in tight tackles !

Finally - A very nice job by Lorenzo (Silk) Colandro in his first go as stand in skipper today including his post match congratulations to our opponents - great sportsmanship!

U10G Team Smith

U10 Girls v Carline Springs at home

•  A very rough and tumble affair against a very good side
•  Essie Zucco and Annie Rahill led the way with 4 qtr efforts.
•  Our girls cracked in hard all day right until the final bell

U10 Team Biggs

Team Biggs played Werribee Districts who are a renowned strong footy club.

We went down by 17 points in the end but the opposition have smashed sides this year and last.

Our ball movement was very good in patches.

BOG was Billy Vernon, repelled their attack and provided a strong presence across the ground.

Hugh Murray did the same, all day. Tough, hard at it and reliable!

Other usual suspects who continue their great form this year were Ethan Marcina, AJ (Big Tone) Barbaro, and Sam Sankovich. All 3 go hunting each week. They hunt the ball and the man! Great on-ballers!

Finally Sam Giansiracusa never gave up all day, with multiple chase down tackles.

We’ll get next time!

U10 Team Manley

•  A tight and contested game out at Hoppers Crossing with plenty of ball ups and congested play. Citta and Justin doing their normal bullocking work at stoppages.
•  The play of the day coming via a strong intercept mark in defence from Ollie Wade and through quick transition, resulted in a great goal to Jack Clampett.
•  Raine Colthurst found a heap of the footy and with his sweeping left foot was our best player for the day.

A 5 point loss in the end, a few more minutes and we may have pinched it. The team has showed incredible strength at the contest and training for cleaner ball handling will get us more reward for effort.

U9 Team Round

U9s Round V Caroline Springs (away)

•  tough, physical contest with both teams putting their head over the ball
•  some slick kicks in their side was prob the difference in the end (52-40)
•  Captain Tom (Dutchy) Van Zuiden led the way with many repeat efforts and multiple tackles and took home the BOG
•  Michael “Nails” Mikael was in and under everything and received the Heartland
•  Jimmy (JD) Duray mopped up everything that was loose and started many attacking drives and took out the Coaches award
•  Darcy “Duke” Round took his opprurnties when up forward slotting 5 goals
•  Special mention to Ump Jezza Cameron who did an incredible job controlling the crowd

We’ll get them on our home deck !

U8 Team Ryan

A fantastic match against a feisty Altona at the snake pit resulting in a 3 goal victory.

The highlights were:

  • James Croydon scoring his first goal in a brilliant performance.
  • Arlo Runnals going back with flight and a selfless Gus Franze repeatedly looking to assist a goal to his captain for the day Thomas Demaria
  • Super proud of the whole team and their development so far this year.
